Hotels and Star Ratings
Hotel ratings will depend to a great extent on who does the rating. An owner will naturally be biased. Someone who benefits from advertising will also be biased. I think we all understand that.
So what to look for? Ratings as unbiased as possible. Easier said than done.
If an organization thumps their virtual chest too hard, I tend to take their ratings as advertising.
A number of organizations in different countries rate hotels in different ways. Conde Nast, J.D. Power, AAA, Michelin, Zagat, etc.

5 Star Hotels - exhibit an exceptionally high degree of service and hospitality .. display an original design, elegant room decor, exceptional dining, and meticulous grounds .. flawless execution of guest services.
4 Star Hotels - a high level of service and hospitality, as well as a wide variety of amenities and upscale facilities .. well-integrated design, stylized room decor, excellent restaurant facilities, and landscaped grounds are all present .. comfort and convenience of the guest.
3 Star Hotels - a higher level of service with additional amenities, features, and facilities .. property grounds, decor, and quality of furnishings are a noticeable upgrade in terms of style and class .. feature restaurants serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
2 Star Hotels - meet a traveler's basic needs for comfort and convenience while offering moderate aesthetic enhancements in the property grounds, room decor, and quality of furnishings .. may offer limited restaurant service.
1 Star Hotels - meet a budget-traveler's basic needs for comfort and convenience .. located near major attractions or thoroughfares and provide clean guest rooms.
Major Issue All the authority ratings are fine if you're staying in internationally recognized hotels, but how do you find ratings on out-of-the-way places.
For instance, what is the rating of the Napali Hotel in Udorn Thani? For me, it's 3 stars. But who am I?
